Old Fashioned?

Do you remember ‘going steady’ with someone? If you do then you are probably in your 40’s or just an old fashioned dater. The phrase ‘going steady’ meant that you where dating only one person exclusively. ‘Going Steady’ meant that you were ready for a level of commitment and traditional the boy would give something of his own to the girl. Typically this ’something’ was a class ring or school jacket. Something that everyone else could see that the girl and boy were committed to each other. So what happened to the interim stage of ‘going steady’?

To answer that, we have to look at society as a whole. Once we see that society has sped up and now there is no time for the simple things, then we start to see what happened to the simple dating interim that was referred to as ‘going steady’.

We got too fast. Life sped up and there is no more time for swings on the porch swing on a moonlit night. There is no more time for midnight walks on the beach. Making money and living our lives became more important than the simple kiss, hug or occasional making out.

Think about your life. Are you living too fast? Are you loving too shallow? Think about the world around you that you are missing because your are moving too fast. As quoted by Ferris in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, “Life moves by pretty quickly, if you don’t stop and take a look around every once in a while, you’re going to miss it.

So, slow down, love and be loved. Hug, kiss and make out. And take the time to enjoy it.
